What is the best writing app for non-fiction other than Scrivener? I want the same options, to see my chapters on a side bar and be able to put notes with each chapter.
That is the basic requirement but other tools are nice, like word count, grammar, etc. Most of the writing apps I am finding are either simple writing, like Word or Goggle Docs, or for novels with characters, plots, etc. Scrivener is too time consuming to learn. Writing and editing takes long enough. Novlr looks like the closest to what I want even though the app is based on novel writing.
Hoping there might be another that I am unaware of. Anyone can answer!! I am using Word currently but really want to get moving on the writing with more organization.

Scrivener is great for authors who love organization, distraction-free writing, and ready-made templates. It creates beautiful, professional documents that you can export to multiple file formats. MS Word is suitable for general writing, but I would not recommend it for novel writing. Although it is perfect for memos, email drafts, and print-ready documents, its organization capabilities are not as robust as Scrivener, Ulysses, or other excellent writing software.
Also, its spelling and grammar checker is not as powerful as ProWritingAid or Grammarly. MS Word is expensive, but many people can use the app without an extra cost because of work or school giving them access. Jay, I believe Chris was talking about whether or not his IDEA for an app was already in existence, not whether his idea could be considered an app. I ran the app and it still there.
Please help! Hi Chris, I was hoping on making a small game for young children or toddlers to use but all of this computing makes no sense to me. Could you help? I am looking to make a review app where people will be able to search an item and find our review for it. Can anyone point me in the right direction for a template?

Or where can I pay somebody to make it? Hey, I am trying to start a social media app.. Would you be interested in a partnership? Or maybe there are tutorials online that teach how to code an instagram-type app? Can anyone tell me the best language for the database. I have an idea for a new social media app.
I just have the base idea, so we would need to discuss it more in depth. If you know how to program that would be a huge help, because I am clueless in this area. However, I can make the design. You will have to be serious about this and we would split all the costs and profits. Please message me if interested on youtube or email mattullian1 gmail. Can anyone help me i have some knowledge in Computer and analysis.. I think I could help you with the design concept. Although the programing would have to be done by yourself or someone else.
I myself have an idea for an app. If we could share ideas and choose the better one I would be glad to work with you. Comes with challenges yet fun for kids, adults, yet so simple.
Please dont ask for my idea so you can use it. You want someone to make you an app for a product or service of which you are not willing to discuss. Exactly how do you see that turning out? I agree that you should not blab your idea around, but when you solicit help in a random forum from complete strangers, what do you expect will happen? You have to discuss it with your app builder, and if you choose someone here that you do not know, you may get scammed.
This is the simplest one I have found but need to build same app for iPad users. Hi Chris, I want to make a songs app of my language for iphone firs and cross platform later. Can i develop an app exctly like saavn , spotify or soundcloud?.
I am really keen to do and learn this. If you could guide me,it would be great or we can do business on this. It would be really appreciative for you if you will help me.
Something where students can log in and answer a survey each week for 10 weeks. At the end of the 10 week period this information can be accessed by staff in a graph or some type of summary. Is this possible? Hey Carly, thanks for your message. Given your short time line and unfamiliarity with building iPhone apps, would you be able to make a webpage with the survey and have the app simply display that page?
Will I be able to do that after finishing all 15 Videos? I was wondering if your premium video class requires a mac for instructions? Hey Naren, unfortunately it does.. There are cheaper options for PC users to get started if you would like to try your hand at iOS development. Would I still be able to take your premium class that way and recieve all the benefits that it offers? Thanks for your interest! Okay, thanks so much, just one quick question, when you said 67 dollars one time fee, does that mean ill pay 67 dollars once, and then after, Ill be able to access your videos and hw as many times and as long as I wish?
Just wanted to clarify. I want to create an app that can be a songbook. I just want a list of songs and then when you click on the name it goes to the right picture and then you can go from one picture to the next until the song is done we are planning on scanning the songs into a computer.
Can anybody help me with that. Hi- I have an idea for an app which I have discussed with primarily women, they love my idea and say they would absolutely use an app as such. My problem is that I am so clueless. I really cannot imagine programming anything I still have problems setting digital clocks LOL!
How could I have an app idea turn into a functioning product, how would it be marketed, would I earn money, etc… Donna. Hey Donna, thanks for commenting! Your other route would be to hire a freelancer to do this. Sites like odesk or elance can help you get quotes for the project. Hi Chris, I have set up a forum using vbulletin and want to add features such as video channel and an app for instant upload.
I also want to add a mapping feature based on info from multi twitter feeds. I have seen a site called getacoder however the variation in quotes for the same job is a mind field on what you are actually getting. Also do you need to use a specific software terminology to get the job quoted.
Regards Dean. The other reason where quotes vary is because the person doing the quoting may or may not have thought out all the details and may miss estimating a piece of functionality or required code. Look at past work, professionalism, communication, ability to deliver on deadlines etc. Chris, thanks for the advice. Based on what I want to achieve is this something that can be achieved at a reasonable cost? What issues do you think I will have? Hey Dean, to get an accurate quote, try to include as much detail as possible down to how many screens your app will have an what each screen will do.
Hey Vusicia! Thanks for messaging. Have you personally developed any apps currently available on the iphone app store? I would be interested in seeing what you have done. Hey Josh, i think social media and recommendations from friends certainly has a lot to do with it. Can Someone without programming experience make an app that really worth? What i try to say is IF someone in the past maked an app and made money out of it without the programming experience that needed.
Hey Nick, i would say that it was easier a long time ago.. The latter is easier for the beginner but its hard to determine what concepts will be a hit in the app store. Can you point me in the right direction. I have been doing a lot of reading and research but theses terms are not familiar to me at all.
Can u please help me? Well, both have their pros and cons. With native you get better performance and quality of app. While with html5 you can build easily and it works on all platforms. I also thought Apple uses hybrid design for some apps, such as their store app. And regarding the store app, that in no way seems to be build in HTML5, as you wont get such a fast responsive app in HTML 5 based on personal experience, I had build few apps and one game in HTML5, then switched to native and saw the performance difference.
Yes, agree to you! But the apps are not completely build in HTML5, the base is in native, for content rendering in some portion they are using html5 and I see that its doing a good job there. I would like to build an app for my website. I sell stuff and see so many well created apps for retailing, such as zulily. Do you have any time to make some money helping my company out?
Hey Victoria, thanks for reaching out! Do you have anyone you would recommend, or a place to look that would have reputable people? Many people want mobile apps but think it is too hard to create them.
Fortunately now there are quite a lot of useful online services which allow building apps without programming skills and in hours. I am using Snappii at the moment and really glad I can feel like a mobile app developer and make apps on my own.
I do know since reading online that I need programs to make an app. The app idea is fun and would be used by many people as I have done some research of people I know that have an iphone. Wally …. I am trying to give a breif description of how app development works but this is a lot to sum up. Hey Nina, do you mean to describe the process from idea to app or just how to explain what programming is in laymans terms?
I am trying to build a very simple video library app, and I work on your tutorial and they are great, thank you. My problem is I found that coding is hard and it will take some time to get it done.
Is there any way to built an app without coding. Hey Arno, sure! There are app templates you could buy on binpress and chupamobile. After all, the world of writing is ever-expanding. Once you're done, you app always transfer your work over for your devices with Scrivener via Dropbox. Familiarize yourself with Objective-C. That is like fro, I want to invent a better engine. Despite its multiple advantages, running a macOS as a guest operating system may have one major disadvantage. I write to create an app that can be ios songbook. Select your "Main.
Select Storyboard, and click Next. Select iPhone from the Devices menu, and then name the file "Main". Make sure that it is saved in the same location as your project. Assign your Storyboard to your project. Once you create the Storyboard, you will need to assign it as the main interface of your app.
This will load the Storyboard when the app is launched. If you don't assign the storyboard, nothing will happen when you start the app up. Click your project name in the left navigation tree.
Find the Targets heading in the main frame. Select your project from the Targets list. Find the Deployment Info section in the General tab. Enter Main. Add your first screen by using a view controller. View controllers dictate how content is viewed by the user. There are a variety of preset view controllers available, including standard views and tables. You will add view controllers to your storyboard, which tells the app how to display the content to the user.
Select your "Main. You will see a blank canvas appear in the Interface Builder window. Find the Object Library.
This is located at the bottom of the right frame, and can be selected by clicking the little cube button. This will load a list of objects that can be added to your canvas. Click and drag the "View Controller" object onto the canvas.
Your first screen will appear on the canvas. Your first "Scene" is complete. When the app is started, the view controller will load your first screen. Add interface objects to your first screen. Once you have the view controller set, you can start populating the screen with the interface objects you need, such as labels, text input fields, and buttons. Interface objects can all be found in the Objects Library list that you found the View Controller object in.
Click and drag objects from the list to add them to your screen. Most objects can be resized by clicking and dragging the boxes on the edge of the object. When resizing, guidelines will appear on the screen so that you can ensure everything lines up correctly. Customize the objects you add. You can adjust the properties for each object, allowing you to create a custom and intuitive interface. For example, you can add placeholder text to a text input field that will help guide the user on what they should input.
Select the object you want to customize and click the "Attributes Inspector" button at the top of the right frame. The button looks kind of like a shield. Customize the object to your liking. You can change font style, font size, text color, alignment, background images, placeholder text, border style, and much more.
The available options will change depending on the object you are customizing. Add more screens. As your project grows, you will probably need to add more screen to display all the content necessary for the app to be useful.
For example, if you are making a to-do list app, you will need at least two screens: one for inputting a to-do list item, and one for viewing the entire list.
More screens are added by dragging and dropping view controller objects onto blanks parts of your canvas. If you can't find a blank spot to drop it, click the "zoom out" button until you find empty areas.
Make sure to drop the view controller onto the canvas and not onto an existing screen. You can change the initial screen by selecting the view controller you want to lead with from the project outline. For example, if you are making a to-do list, you'll want the actual list to be the first thing the user sees when the app is launched. Add a navigation bar. Now that you have two screens in your app, it's time to make it so that the user can move back and forth between them.
You can do this through the use of a Navigation Controller, which is a specialized View Controller. This controller adds a navigation bar to the top of your app that allows user to move back and forth between screens.
Select your initial view in the project outline. You should see a gray navigation bar appear at the top of the screen you added the controller to. Add functionality to the navigation bar. Now that you have inserted the navigation bar, you can start adding navigation tools to it. This will allow your user to move back and forth between screens. Add a title to the navigation bar. Click the Navigation Item underneath the view controller you assigned it to.
Open the Attribute Inspector and type the title of the current screen in the Title field. Add a navigation button. Open the Objects library if its not already open and find the Bar Button Item. Click and drag it to the navigation bar. Typically, buttons that move you "forward" in the app are placed to the right, and buttons that move you "back" are placed to the left. Give the button a property. Buttons can be configured to have specific properties that make them easy to adapt to the circumstance.
For example, if you are creating a to-do list, you'll want an "Add" button to create a new entry. Select the button, and open the Attribute Inspector. Find the Identifier menu and choose "Add". Link your new button to an existing screen. In order for your button to function, you will need to connect it to another screen.
In our to-do list example, the button is located on the overall list, and needs to be linked to the entry screen. To link the button, hold the Ctrl and drag the button onto the second screen. Choose "Push" to use the push transition when moving between screens. You can also choose "Modal", which will open the screen as a self-contained action as opposed to a sequence.
If you use Push, a navigation bar will be added automatically to your second screen and a "back" button will be automatically created. If you choose modal, you will need to manually insert a second navigation bar as well as add a "Cancel" and "Done" button for a to-do list; the labels of your buttons will change depending on the needs of your app.
Add data handling capabilities. Up to this point, you've been able to create a basic navigable interface without the need for any coding. If you want to add any deeper functionality, such as data storage and handling user input, you'll need to get your hands dirty in the code. Coding is outside of the scope of this guide, but there are a large number of Objective-C tutorials available online. Having a working interface will make it much easier to explain what you need on the coding side of things.
Part 4 of Start the iOS Simulator. Xcode comes with a built-in iOS simulator that lets you test your app on a variety of simulated iOS devices. To start the Simulator, choose "Simulator and Debug" from the dropdown menu at the top of the Xcode window, and then choose the device you want to test on. Build the app. Click the Build button, which looks like a traditional Play button, to compile the app and run it. Building the app may take a few minutes. Once the build process is complete, the iOS Simulator will open and you can begin testing your app.
Test the app on your own iPhone. Before distributing your app for testing, you can test it on your own device if you have one. First, plug your device into your computer via USB. Close iTunes if it opens.
Select "Device and Debug" from the dropdown menu, and then click the Build button. After a few seconds the app should launch on the iPhone. Debug your app. If your app crashed, you need to start figuring out what happened and why.
This is a vast subject and there are countless reasons why your app may have crashed. Open the debug console and read the error messages. Most of the time they are rather cryptic. If you do not understand the error, try Googling the error message.
Chances are, you will find a post on the Apple development forum where a friendly seasoned developer has answered their plea. Debugging can be a very time consuming and tedious time for you. If you don't give up and persevere, in time you will get better at it.
You will start to recognize the errors, track them down quickly, and even expect them on occasions. One common mistake is releasing an object from memory more than once. Another is forgetting to allocate memory and initialize an object before trying to add or assign to it.
With each app your errors will become fewer and fewer. Check memory usage. The iPhone has a very limited amount of memory. Each time you allocate an object some memory, you have to release it when you are done with it and give back the memory.
Instruments is the iPhone SDK tool for viewing and analyzing your memory usage amongst other things. This will launch Instruments and start the app on your device. Further, the benefit of learning iOS app development is that you can write apps for both iPhone and iPad. In fact, a large number of programmers these days start off with iPhone app development and then move on to iPad app development for good.
From a skill perspective, iPhone and iPad app development are similar. The only major difference is that the programmer needs to account for the larger iPad screen size. If you want to learn how to make an iPhone app , you need certain tools to do so.
However, if you do not have a Mac, the best solution is to look for a Windows-based iPhone development environment. Windows-based iPhone development tools such as PhoneGap, Appcelerator Titanium provide a cross-platform experience so developers write the code once and it can be run on multiple platforms such as Android, iPhone and BlackBerry.
The best part is most of these Windows-based development tools are either free or cost a fraction of the Mac development costs. Some of the most popular iPhone development tools include:. Honestly, I am so thankful for my Evernote app. I'm a big fan of jotting down fresh new ideas on my phone. But notes aren't the only thing you can save.
